We like to say that September is  INDEPENDENCE MONTH here. Guatemala’s Independence Day is September 15th, but the celebrations start the first of the month and carry through until the end. There are celebrations nearly every day with traditional foods, traditional dress, election of student representatives, parades, parties, and all kinds of celebrations.

 

One of my favorite traditions is the antorcha in which the students travel to a nearby city where they light a torch and carry it back to school running. Onlookers try to throw water at the participants to extinguish the torch. It’s quite exciting! It’s so fun to see the students dressed up and celebrating their culture (even if that means classes are cancelled almost every day!).

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR GRADUATING STUDENTS

 

Thanks to generous donors, we were able to provide two scholarships to graduating sixth graders this school year. The school in our community only goes to 6th grade. After 6th grade, families must pay transportation, tuition, and for school supplies if the students are to continue studying. Unfortunately, most students’ families cannot afford these additional costs.

 

Daniela and Junior, our 2026 scholarship recipients, have been studying in Escuintla. Both are the first generation of their families to graduate the 6th grade. They are SO GRATEFUL for the opportunity to continue studying and hope to be able to help support their families in the future with good jobs.

 

We will be providing two additional scholarships this year and need your help to do so! We are looking to add $200/month to our recurring monthly support to pay these two additional scholarships.
